In recent decades, Milan has undergone a profound urban transformation: from an industrial city to an international metropolis focused on sustainability. Among the most emblematic projects is the Bicocca district, designed by Gregotti and Associates, which revitalized former industrial areas by hosting the University of Milan-Bicocca and promoting an eco-innovation model.
To comply with new regulations for the Rectorate and General Management spaces located in Building U6 – known as Agorà, the University chose Active Surfaces® by Iris Ceramica Group: antibacterial and antiviral, anti-pollution, anti-odor, and self-cleaning surfaces that reflect contemporary and sustainable ideals for healthy environments.
The renovation involved the flooring of the Agorà, an area of 735.5 m² on the fourth floor of Building U6. Architect Laura Vergani selected the Pietra di Basalto Active collection in Beige, size 150×100 cm, thickness 6 mm, installed by Fratelli Moncini srl. Inspired by volcanic basalt with elegant and refined tones, the texture is enhanced by a finish that emphasizes its three-dimensionality. This choice aligns with the University’s ecological conversion strategy: Active Surfaces® are eco-sustainable, produced in zero-emission plants, and fully recyclable.
Beyond its refined design, Active Surfaces® meets the University’s need for hygiene and safety, proving to be an ideal green solution for all spaces requiring constant cleanliness.
